EXPLORE MHOR

Set at the head of Loch Voil in the beautiful Balquhidder glen, the Monachyle Mhor Estate is perfectly placed for exploring the Trossachs, with scenic walks, Munro climbs, wild swimming, paddleboarding, fishing, and countless outdoor adventures right on our doorstep.

Although it feels wonderfully remote, we’re less than two hours from both Glasgow and Edinburgh, making Monachyle Mhor an easy escape for a weekend break or a longer stay.

Walks and Hiking in Balquhidder

The glen surrounding Monachyle Mhor offers some of the most beautiful walking in Scotland.

The famous Rob Roy Way passes nearby, winding through spectacular hills, forests and lochs. A short drive away, you can also visit the final resting place of the legendary Highland outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor, making Balquhidder an important part of his story.

For more adventurous walkers, five Munros lie nearby, offering rewarding climbs and breathtaking views across the Trossachs. Our team will happily recommend routes to suit your plans.

Swimming, Paddling and Wildlife

Just steps from the hotel lies the peaceful waters of Loch Voil, where guests often enjoy a refreshing swim, a quiet paddle or simply time spent by the water watching the changing light over the hills. The loch and surrounding landscape are home to a rich variety of wildlife, making it the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.

Whisky and Distillery Tours

No visit to Scotland is complete without discovering its whisky heritage, and we’re fortunate to have one of the country’s most characterful distilleries just a short drive away. Deanston Distillery sits on the banks of the River Teith and offers fascinating guided tours, where visitors can learn about the distilling process, explore the historic cotton mill buildings and sample their award-winning Highland single malts.

At Monachyle Mhor Hotel, we have a close relationship with Deanston and proudly feature their whiskies throughout the hotel, from the bar to our curated drinks menus. Their rich, honeyed Highland style pairs beautifully with the seasonal food served in our restaurant.

If you’d like to visit the distillery itself, or arrange a tasting during your stay, just speak to our team and we’ll be happy to help organise the experience.
